Artist Statement

​Pamela Jones is a figurative ceramic sculptor who lives and works in Wales. After spending over a decade in London as an actress, particularly at the National Theatre and The Peter Hall Company, she moved to America with her family before returning to Wales where she studied ceramics at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

 Her formative career as an actress, a wealth of historical influences and the female figure, underpins all her dramatic narrative works.  Jones`s sculptures are reflections on the human condition and participate with the present through historical, political and cultural perspectives, which are poignant and thought provoking. 

Jones admires the artistry, skill, and precision of miniature art. She works predominantly as a miniaturist in keeping with miniature techniques and traditions. She uses porcelain with impeccable detail, and a dogged perseverance for perfection. The contrast of working in miniature, while pushing the limits of porcelain to achieve translucency and quality, is a skill she has attempted to master over many years. All pieces are unique; hand built, modelled, and adorned with symbols that augment their meaning. Often under glazes, decals, and lustres are added and sometimes pieces are fired several times. More recently, mixed media has been introduced as an additional element of the work.

In 2020 during lockdown, Jones set herself the challenge of honing the skill of the technically difficult bas-relief style. Applying this to 3/4 life-size and miniature scale, ensuring proportions are believable, with little distortion when viewed from all angles.

Whilst studying for her ceramics degree, Jones developed different skill sets enabling her to make her own plinths and bases through turning and slip casting, often using moulds she has made herself.  She also takes master moulds of her bas-relief portraiture enabling her to make editions.

Jones exhibits her work nationally and internationally, is a commissioned artist, and a member of The Society of Women Artists and The Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers.   Until recently she taught ceramics before deciding to concentrate on her ceramics practice full time.
